Student prices for statistics software

published by datasciencesoftware.com

key takeaways
  • Two major packages are free for students: SAS OnDemand for Academics and JMP Student Edition.
  • The cheapest paid student license we found is Stata/BE at $48 for 6 months, or $94 for a year.
  • GraphPad Prism student subscriptions are $142 (Standard) or $213 (Pro) per year.
  • IBM doesn't list SPSS GradPack prices. It sells them through authorized academic resellers.

Vendors that publish student prices charge students far less than businesses, but the discounts work differently. Some are free editions, some are short-term licenses, and one is sold only through resellers. Here’s what each vendor publishes.

Which student options are free?

  • SAS OnDemand for Academics is free and runs in a browser. You get 5 GB of cloud storage. See the record.
  • JMP Student Edition is free for qualified students. You renew it at no cost every 12 months while you remain eligible. See the record.
  • The open-source tools (R, jamovi, JASP, PSPP, gretl) are free for everyone. Compare them.

How much is Stata for students?

StataCorp sells student licenses in three terms: 6 months, annual and perpetual. Stata/BE is $48, $94 and $298 respectively. Stata/SE is $95, $179 and $485. Stata/MP isn’t offered on a 6-month term. All 6-month and annual licenses include StataNow feature updates. Full Stata price table.

For a one-semester methods course, the 6-month Stata/BE license is the cheapest paid option on this page. Stata/SE handles larger datasets than BE.

How do you get SPSS as a student?

IBM’s GradPack page says student editions (Base, Standard and Premium) are sold through IBM-authorized academic vendors. IBM doesn’t list a price, and we haven’t verified reseller prices, so there’s no SPSS student price in the table. Check whether your university provides SPSS before buying. SPSS record.

What about GraphPad Prism and Minitab?

GraphPad publishes student subscriptions at $142 (Standard) and $213 (Pro) per year. Minitab doesn’t publish prices; its pricing page sends you to an inquiry form.

What should you check before you buy?

  1. Your university’s software page. Campus licenses are common for SPSS, Stata, SAS and JMP.
  2. The term you need. Pay for one semester, not a year, if the course is one semester.
  3. Edition limits. Stata’s editions differ in dataset size and speed.
  4. Whether the free route is enough. For coursework, jamovi or JASP can often stand in for SPSS. Check with your instructor first.

Questions

What proof do I need for a Stata student license?
StataCorp says students at degree-granting institutions qualify and that proof of student status, such as a copy of your university ID card, is required.
Should I buy a 6-month or annual Stata student license?
For a single semester, the 6-month license costs less ($48 for Stata/BE). For a full year, the annual license ($94) is cheaper than two 6-month licenses ($96).
Does my university already pay for this?
Often. Many universities license SPSS, Stata, SAS or JMP campus-wide. Check your IT department's software page before you buy. We don't track individual university licenses yet.
