Perpetual or annual license? The breakeven math
- A Stata/BE student perpetual license ($298) costs less than annual renewals ($94/year) from the fourth year.
- Stata/SE, MP 2-core and MP 4-core student perpetual licenses pay off from the third year.
- A GraphPad Prism perpetual license takes until year seven to beat the Standard subscription, and comes with no upgrades.
- Perpetual licenses lock you to the version you bought. Stata's StataNow updates come only with 6-month and annual licenses.
Of the vendors we track, StataCorp and GraphPad publish perpetual prices next to their subscriptions. IBM says perpetual SPSS licenses exist but doesn’t list a price. Where a price is published, the question is simple arithmetic: how many years of annual payments add up to the one-time price? The answer depends on the vendor’s own price list, so we compute it from the prices on file.
When does a perpetual license pay off?
| License | Perpetual | Annual | Perpetual is cheaper from |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stata Stata/BE (Student) | $298 | $94 | Year 4 |
| Stata Stata/SE (Student) | $485 | $179 | Year 3 |
| Stata Stata/MP 2-core (Student) | $695 | $275 | Year 3 |
| Stata Stata/MP 4-core (Student) | $995 | $375 | Year 3 |
| Prism Prism 11 Academic (Academic) | $1,600 | $260a | Year 7 |
| Prism Prism 11 Corporate (Corporate) | $3,200 | $520a | Year 7 |
a For GraphPad, we compare the perpetual license with the Standard personal subscription. GraphPad doesn’t say which feature tier the perpetual license matches.
Prices from StataCorp and GraphPad, checked Oct 30, 2026. Year N means that by the end of year N, N annual payments would cost more than the one-time price.
How is the breakeven year calculated?
For each pair, we add up the annual price year by year, using the renewal price where the vendor lists one. The breakeven year is the first year in which that running total is higher than the perpetual price. For Stata/BE students: 3 years cost $282, still under $298. 4 years cost $376, over it. So perpetual wins from year 4.
These are list prices only. They exclude taxes, discounts, and any future price changes. Vendors can raise annual prices, which would make perpetual pay off sooner.
What do you give up with a perpetual license?
- Updates. StataCorp says its 6-month and annual licenses get the latest features through StataNow. A perpetual license stays on the version you bought.
- Support for future systems. GraphPad warns that its perpetual license has no guaranteed support for future operating-system updates.
- Team features. GraphPad’s perpetual license has no group management or collaboration features.
Which should you choose?
If you’ll use the same tool for longer than the breakeven period, and you’re happy to stay on one version, a perpetual license costs less. For a thesis or a degree that ends in two or three years, the annual license usually wins. It’s also the only way to get feature updates.
This is a cost comparison, not advice about which edition you need. Check edition limits on the Stata and GraphPad Prism records first.
