Anaconda’s free tier depends on where your packages come from and how big your organization is. Answer three questions to see which of Anaconda’s published rules applies to you. This summarizes Anaconda’s pages; it isn’t legal advice.

What are Anaconda’s rules?

From Anaconda’s pricing page and the Terms of Service FAQ, both read on Oct 30, 2026:

  • Organization size. Anaconda’s pricing page says users in organizations with 200 or more employees or contractors, including affiliates, need a paid Business license. Academic and nonprofit research institutions may qualify for exemptions.
  • conda itself is free. The FAQ says conda doesn’t require a license. The Anaconda Distribution installer does, for organizations over 200 employees or contractors.
  • Miniforge and conda-forge. According to the FAQ, Miniforge and Mambaforge don’t require a commercial license. They connect to conda-forge, which isn’t subject to Anaconda’s payment requirements. Anaconda’s Terms of Service still apply to content it hosts.
  • Miniconda. It points to Anaconda’s repository by default, so package updates through it fall under the Terms of Service.
  • Old installers. Anaconda Distribution installers downloaded before March 31, 2024 don’t require a commercial license. Package updates from the current repository do.

What does a Business license cost?

Anaconda lists Business at $50 per user per month and Starter at $15 per user per month. The Free plan is $0. See the Anaconda record for every row and source.

How do you stop using Anaconda’s repository?

If your organization isn’t eligible for free use, the route Anaconda itself describes as free is Miniforge, which uses conda-forge. Moving an existing environment means reinstalling its packages from conda-forge. Test that before switching production systems.
